not much time, but here´s my suggestion for this weeks movie. Punishment Park (1971) by Peter watkins. The film is in a Faux Documentary style that envisages a situation where a state of emergency has been issued using the Macarron Act in the late 60´s(a 60´s version of the partriot act). Left wing activists and anti war protesters are rounded up and face an emergency tribunal where they are given a choice 15 years in prison of "punishment park" where they are used as training fodder for Police and the National Guard. The film follows a documentary crew as they record the Authorites and their "fair" and "appropriate" actions in hunting the activists.
ReplyDeleteWhen this film came out it almost sunk like trace, as it received very extreme reactions to it´s message, with some even stating that the film was literally an act of treason, adding that this situation "would never happen in this country". However it has gained a massive cult following over the years and in a world where there is "War on Terror", the Patriot Act, Guantanamo Bay, Extroadinary Rendition and Fox news, this film seems very Essential to modern culture...
